Humanitarian Nurse Helen Zahos aligns herself with international charities to empower, educate and inspire positive change within vulnerable communities.

Zahos has volunteered in disaster areas all around the world. Now working for the non-profit organisation World Youth International as one of their Nurses in Action Ambassador, she will help further develop and expand their programs and empower volunteers, whilst continuing to make a positive and sustainable difference to the vulnerable communities in which she works.

Currently Brisbane based, Zahos grew up on Groote Eylandt, in the Northern Territory. She completed her Nursing and Paramedic studies in Darwin, where she was working in the Emergency Department and was involved with the Royal Darwin Hospital Response to the Bali Bombings. Zahos has volunteered in Iraq, in Nepal after the earthquake and The Philippines after the typhoon, as well as assisting during the Syrian refugee crisis on the border of Greece.

Zahos most recently marked the beginning of International Year of the Nurse with a trip to Kenya on World Youth International’s Nurses In Action Volunteer Program which included travelling throughout Australia to be involved in various conferences and events. She enjoyed sharing her experiences and insights from her time in Kenya, and communicating how other Australians can also embrace and benefit from a unique, powerful and immersive volunteer experiences. Zahos is recognised internationally for her volunteer humanitarian work, which includes nominations for multiple awards including Australian of the Year Queensland in 2016 and 2017.
