Unable to find something that ticked all her nutritional and dietary boxes on the shelf, Brisbane’s Janessa Rutter took a home recipe, Instagram and a Google search, and created Bask & Co., a small-batch, artisan granola company that has been amassing fans and gracing breakfast bowls for five years.

After being diagnosed as gluten-intolerant, Janessa quickly grew tired of the bland or over-processed ‘health’ products available in supermarkets. Using her hospitality experience, she started experimenting for herself, finding combos of flavours and nourishing ingredients she enjoyed and sharing them online. She soon attracted a following and reputation for recipe development, both with others adjusting to gluten-free life and health food companies.

While working with big names like Chobani and Cocobella, Janessa created a granola recipe her family and colleagues loved. Realising there was a gap in the market for the product, she Googled ‘how to start a food business’ and, over the next six months, worked to set up Bask & Co. She landed her first stockist within days of launching the brand in September 2016. The range soon gained a cult following around Brisbane, with many dubbing it the “best granola they’ve ever eaten”.

Her flavour that started it all – Almond & Coconut, an ANZAC biscuit-like blend of almonds, coconut, dates and Janessa’s own Dark Roasted Almond Butter – is still a best-seller. But, as the brand has grown in popularity, it has been joined by new products like Caramel Coffee Granola Clusters and a Dark Chocolate version. All the clusters taste just like biscuits but are coeliac friendly, vegan and refined sugar-free to suit families with a range of dietary requirements.
