When given the opportunity to help empower vulnerable women, Great Southern Memorial Park manager Janine Hone couldn’t say no. A chance meeting at an event a year ago between Janine and two Support The Girls Australia volunteers led to a grassroots partnership which is helping women in need across the country.

The charity helps empower thousands of women trying to escape the cycle of poverty, violence and trauma. It ensures they have dignity and respect by providing them with fitted underwear and sanitary products. “After speaking to the representatives from Support The Girls Australia I knew right away I wanted to find a way to support the charity and the wonderful work they do,” Janine said.

“I decided to make Great Southern an official collection point where our families and the public could drop off pre-loved underwear as well as sanitary products. “Over the past eight months, staff and families of Great Southern have donated many items. Everyone has been extremely generous towards the cause. It is extremely heart-warming to see the outpouring of support. Given the current climate that COVID-19 restrictions have placed on individuals, families and businesses this year, Great Southern is proud to support a charity that continues to assist those most in need.”

Great Southern also presented Support The Girls Australia with a small cash amount after collecting gold coin donations for a Mother’s Day initiative. “Because of COVID-19 restrictions we weren’t able to hold our usual Mother’s Day service so instead we had local florist Flower Crew generously donate posies families could buy for a gold coin donation,” she said. “Our families and the community have really got behind the initiatives and we are continuing to act as a collection point so hopefully we will see more generosity over the coming months.”

Great Southern Memorial Park is located at 1774-1794 Mt Cotton Road, Carbrook. Donations can be dropped off at the office Monday-Friday between 8.30am and 5pm. For more information, call (07) 3829 9999.
