A Gold Coast mum whose traumatic childbirth inspired her to create a small business supporting and treating expectant, birthing and postnatal mothers has been shortlisted for a prestigious business award.

Mother-of-two Jess Ngaheu discovered after a shocking childbirth in 2019 that there was a lack of services dedicated to helping women prepare for and heal after becoming mums. Hence, Maternal Grounding was born. The business supports, empowers and nurtures pregnant women, new mums and their babies with massage, holistic therapies and wellness to assist with deep healing and grounding.

To make it happen, Jess learned reflexology, acupressure and reiki among other holistic treatments after working as a massage therapist and personal trainer for many years. Maternal Grounding’s services are now in so much demand that she is consistently booked out four weeks in advance. Her success has earned Jess a nomination in the 2021 AusMumpreneur Awards, which support Australian mums in business, challenging the stereotypes and raising awareness about the contributions made by women with young children to the Australian economy. As a result of his birth injury, Hawaiki has special needs and requires around the clock care.

“After my son’s horrific birth, I was really able to have deep compassion and empathy with what women go through in the birthing process, particularly ones with trauma,” she said. “I changed that day and even though it was horrific, it has made me who I am and shaped what I do. Having a child with special needs is truly a challenge and he requires a lot of care, but I also know I need to be of service to new mamas. I know I am making a real difference in the lives of my clients and they resonate with my holistic wellness sessions, receiving deep healing and support in their own journey of motherhood.”
