Nicole Lamond and Julie Hirsch created Eloments Urban Defence, a herbal tea blend of raspberry, pomegranate and rooibos with zinc derived from guava plants, less than two years ago.

Woolworths shelves are now being stocked with what’s claimed to be a world-first innovation – a 100 per cent organic certified tea. The Fairtrade and female-founded business based in Melbourne, Australia.

The female founders Nicole and Julie attribute the success of their company to their commitment to their mission: accelerating the world’s transition to a fair wage for all workers. “We believe the best things in life are free, and everything else should be fairly traded. We want to demonstrate that running a successful business and ethical decision making are not only compatible, but can be the norm,” said Ms Lamond.

While committing almost two per cent of their turnover to Fairtrade is not standard for a startup, Eloments journey has definitely not been a standard one. Co-founders Julie and Nicole started Eloments Vitamin Teas for people who care about their health and want to have a positive impact on the world.

The pair assure customers that Eloments (and other products with the label), involve no exploited, bonded or child labour in the making of their products. The team sources Fairtrade ingredients from around the world, from bourbon vanilla in Madagascar to cardamom in Sri Lanka. These teas and spices are then blended with nutrient-rich fruit and herbal extracts.

Co-founders Nicole and Julie hope to encourage other entrepreneurs and businesses reviewing their supply chain to move towards fair and ethical products.
