Finalists in the 2020 Lord Mayor’s Business Awards have shown how Brisbane will grow and transform in a COVID-safe way. Amongst this year’s finalists are female business owners, Marie Mortimer, Ashleigh Morris, Carly Brown, and a female-led waste consultancy company.
Marie founded loans.com.au in 2011 as a FinTech initiative for Firstmac. The company also sponsors Women in Digital, an organisation dedicated to connecting, mentoring, educating, and empowering women in digital. Co-Founder of Coreo, Ashleigh Morris, launched in 2017 which advises and guides industry and government through circular economy aspirations on a strategic and operational level.
Launched in 2016 by Carly Brown, UNE Piece is a sun-safe swimwear brand that specialises in fabrics and fit that empower women to be sun conscious while looking and feeling great. Female-founded and led Waste Consultancy, servicing the waste industry, and waste-conscious organisations. Resources Hub is unique to the Brisbane market which has allowed them to support female-founded businesses that touch on their sector and collaborate rather than compete, driving their success.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said he was thrilled to see how Brisbane businesses were adapting and overcoming difficult times through determination and ingenuity. “Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy and are critical to our economic recovery,” Cr Schrinner said. “From community and sustainability to digital transformation and social enterprise, Brisbane businesses have risen to the challenges of 2020 and are reaching new levels of success.”
Finalists for the inaugural HSBC Award for Excellence in Business Adaption also include FairShare, Gnocchi Gnocchi Brothers, Street Science, and The Little Red Company. In recognition of the challenging environment in which businesses have had to adapt, the 2020 Lord Mayor’s Business Awards will celebrate those who have shown excellence in business adaption. “One of the things COVID-19 has shown us is that Brisbane businesses were prepared to step up and adapt to the ever-changing environment,” Cr Schrinner said.
Winners of the 2020 Lord Mayor’s Business Awards will be announced on 26 November 2020.
