Jessie Glew joined co-working company WOTSO Workspace after having been with the parent company of WOTSO BlackWall since 2011, working her way up from Property Management roles before taking on the position as COO in late 2017. Jessie’s career trajectory follows on from a strong education background in both Communication & Media Studies and Property Economics. Glew’s day to day is never the same as she oversees the management and operations of the property portfolio – between negotiating new site locations, managing strategic business decisions on the 14 sites, the BlackWall COO’s day is a dynamic and fast-paced one.

Glew is driven in her work by giving individuals the opportunity to work in a flexible unconventional environment that fosters collaboration. “Aside from the businesses unique points – such as no lock in contracts and creating that really flexible working arrangement with all of our members – the spaces themselves are dynamic, exciting, networking driven environments. We host weekly networking opportunities for our members, so they can really benefit from a true co-working experience,” she says.

While productivity and collaboration are paramount, Jessie believes the environment should not suffer because of it. Sustainability is a large factor in all decision-making. “Another key component that makes WOTSO truly unique is our focus on sustainability- as we grow, we want to continue to be really aware of our footprint on the Earth. We try to maximise and up-cycle elements of an original building or property we go into to be as sustainable as possible.”

For example, WOTSO on the Sunshine Coast has all of the offices and meeting rooms built into up-cycled shipping containers, while the light fixtures are fitted with old rubber tyres. This also means, no site is ever the same. In order to stay current, Glew is always ensuring WOTSO is analysing market trends and customers needs. One of the biggest challenges to overcome is the crowded market. “Like so many other co-working spaces, we are vying for member attention in a crowded market. There are so many interesting co-working solutions out there, however we know our offering is unique and adds value to small to medium businesses.”

If Glew has any advice for aspiring business start-ups its to be bold and take risks. “But at the same time, surround yourself with experts in their given disciplines – even if it’s a mentor, or a colleague. From the outset, ensure you are across all aspects of your business, particularly as it’s growing. Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Without the knowledge, you might find yourself on the back foot.”
