Raised in Western Sydney, Dhee became a worldwide star in South Asian Tamil music and is home in Australia to celebrate the release of her much anticipated pop singles Can’t You Stay a Little Longer, and I Wear My Roots Like a Medal.
Dee’s many fans converged on the Sydney Cricket Ground on Thursday 15 August when she showcased her new independent music at the Indian Independence Day Celebrations. The two new singles are from Dhee’s upcoming debut independent album JACKFRUIT, which will be released later this year.
Dhee is one of the most streamed pop stars from Australia with 5.7 million monthly listeners on Spotify, while her biggest track has over a billion streams combined. Yet most Australians have yet to hear about her. Early on in her career, Dhee’s talents took her to India where she became one of the most sought-after singers for blockbuster Indian Tamil & Telugu movies. With multiple viral and culture-defining songs, Dhee is a household name for millions of South Asians around the world.
I Wear My Roots Like a Medal is a powerful new single that honours her past and celebrates her identity. “I wrote this song based on three generations of experiences: my grandma’s, my mum’s and my own. This is the story of many people who had to leave their homes without a choice in order for survival, who built a new life and found a new home. It’s about feeling caught between two worlds and identities, and growing up and resolving that inner conflict,” says Dhee.
