Lucy Durack has emerged as one of Australia’s leading ladies on both stage and screen. Recently appearing on the stage as Glinda the Good Witch in the Australian production of The Wizard of Oz, Lucy’s blossoming career is the result of a fierce passion for performing and years of hard work in the background.
Lucy’s aspiration to become an actor was forged in childhood, when she first experienced movie musicals and the likes of Judy Garland and Julie Andrews lighting up the silver screen. Perth-born Lucy was mesmerised by these grand, colourful displays of love, happiness, and camaraderie, and she enrolled in the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, which has hosted such successful alumni as Hugh Jackman.
Lucy graduated with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Musical Theatre, and she took on various stage roles with the Melbourne Theatre Company, including Sybil Chase in Private Lives and Peggy Sawyer in 42nd Street. Her big break came when she was enlisted to understudy and perform the role of Sophie in Louise Withers’ production of MAMMA MIA! Lucy then tried her hand at television acting, which, of course, proved to be an easy transition. She appeared in several Australian favourites, including Upper Middle Bogan and Here Come the Habibs.
Recently, her television filming schedule has been busy, working on the ABC comedy series The Letdown, season 2 of Doctor Doctor and new Australian drama Sisters. These additions to her resume are a further testament to her flexibility, with Lucy transitioning from stage to screen, and from comedy to drama with ease.
Lucy’s talents do not just begin and end with acting. Her tantalising vocals have been used to create a number of audiobooks, including an addition to her family story with Dame Mary Durack’s Kings in Grass Castles, and the children’s book Lucy the Good. She regularly appears in concert across the country, and has even sung the British and Australian National Anthems for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh at the state reception held in Perth’s Governor’s Gardens. Lucy’s radio show My Soundtrack has been the ABC’s most downloaded radio show four summers running, and her debut album Lucy Durack has enjoyed success on iTunes and in ABC stores throughout Australia. With her tenacious work ethic and seemingly immense cache of talents, Lucy Durack is a mainstay in the Australian entertainment scene.
