As Brisbane Interior Designer and Creative Director Renee Watson is preparing to hold the inaugural Reno Home Show at the historic Brisbane RNA Showgrounds from 20 to 21 July, she knows she can rely on her mum, well known Brisbane florist Kate Dawes, to offer her full support and guidance. “Mum always taught me to be myself, to see the beauty in everything and to not be worried about what other people think of me and my creativity,” Renee says.
Kate is the proud owner of Kate Dawes Flower Design in Woolloongabba and could not be prouder of her daughter’s strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit. “Renee had her first job when she was about 10 years old. She swept the floor at a hairdressers shop and earnt $10 a morning. Her determination astounds me,” Kate says.
It was while attending wedding shows and expos with her mum that Renee got a taste for them. She soon came up with the idea to do a fresh take on a traditional home show and so the Reno Home Show was born. “I loved the community the wedding shows created and all the exhibitors coming together to create an experience for the visitors,” Renee says. The Reno Home Show is a boutique event aimed at home renovators that will bring together more than 100 of the country’s best designers, architects, stylists, home builders, trades and product suppliers.
Renee has learnt a lot from her mum over the years. “I love how hardworking she is and she never gives up. She is the true definition of resilience. She is so innovative and I love the way she can make anything look amazing,” she says. They also have a lot in common. “We are both very determined and love the challenge in making something out of nothing. We both think outside the box and we don’t have many differences,” Renee says.
Renee hopes to share the lessons her mum has taught her with her own children, Leilani, age nine, and Quinn, age five. “She is a caring, loving, mother. Renee is driven to help her children reach their full potential. Her success will be their success,” Kate says.
The Reno Home Show has something for everyone . Exhibitors and presenters include Three Birds Renovations run by three best friends and busy mothers who swapped the boardroom for a building site to pursue their passion for renovating; highly acclaimed Brisbane architect Shaun Lockyer; mavenHOME interior architect and designer Lee Talbot; and founder of Undercover Architect, Amelia Lee. There will also be interactive workshops, panel discussions and conversations with industry leaders and inspirational guests.
