Sunshine Coast dog food entrepreneur Emma Gibbon has won first prize in the 2023 Queensland AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award.

The award acknowledges women in rural industries, businesses, and communities, who have significantly impacted their fields, and was selected out of four finalists. Ms Gibbons has been awarded a $15,000 Westpac grant and will represent Queensland in the September national finals, where she will be considered for an additional $20,000 Westpac grant.

Her Coolum Beach-based business, Huds and Toke, creates animal food and treats with Australian-farmed insect protein and vegetable surplus. Through using alternative ingredients, Huds and Toke treats produce a lower carbon footprint and reduce waste. Ms Gibbons was recognised for her innovative dog food and for building a successful local business with the support of sustainable agricultural practices.

John Harvey, the Managing Director of AgriFutures Australia, stated that the award aims to give female leaders the platform to expand their skills and drive change in rural and regional Australia. “It’s exciting to see Emma Gibbons already making such a positive influence in her industry and community,” Mr Harvey said.

The other finalists, Emma Black, Louise Noble, and Kate Lamason, have each been awarded $2000 by sponsors The University of Queensland to support the continuation of their projects. All finalists will join the Rural Women’s Award alumni, who advocate for other women and support each other in business endevours.

Mark Furner, the Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities, commended Ms Gibbon on her entrepreneurial success. “I’d also like to acknowledge the efforts of the other finalists, who have all made substantial contributions to their industries and communities,” Mr Furner said. “Queensland’s rural industries are incredibly diverse, and these women demonstrate just a few of the many roles that help grow our sector to become more sustainable and prosperous,” he said.

The other State/Territory winners will be announced over the coming months, with the National Announcement occurring on 12 September 2023.
