Young fashion designer Tayla McFarlane from Sheldon College has been rewarded Grand Champion at this year’s Ekka Natural Fibres Competition.
The Natural Fibres Make and Model Competition sees aspiring designers of all ages showcasing their latest creations. There are several categories: Adult Formal Wear, Adult Daywear, Adult Casual/Activewear, and Kids in Natural Fibres.
The 14-year old fashion designer has entered nine designs and placed eight times. It was also her first time to enter the open categories, despite she has entered the Ekka Fibres Competition before. The inspiration behind her yellow gown was to showcase confidence and alluring elegance to the catwalk. The colour was chosen to give a powerful entrance into any glamorous event. McFarlane used yellow silk satin fabric that she bought a few seasons ago as the material for the dress and she believed the colour used was spectacular.
McFarlane designed the dress within a month and she was thankful to her Fashion Teacher. “I am extremely blessed to have an amazing Fashion Teacher Vanessa who pushes me to be the best designer I can and she believes in me and my ability to create these amazing designs.”
McFarlane was astonished when she was told that she had won the competition. “When Pamela told me I had won Grand Champion, I couldn’t believe it. I really didn’t think I was going to win as it was my first time competing in the open categories with The Ekka.”
McFarlane is preparing for her next competition, the Apex Australia Teenage Fashion Awards (AATFA), which will be held on 25 September. Congratulations to McFarlane again for her massive achievement.
