Canvas Coworking hosted this year’s 54-hour Startup Weekend Women from 14 to 16 September. The event brings together designers, developers, marketers and startup enthusiasts from across the southern Queensland region to share ideas, form teams and launch exciting business ventures. The intensive three day event included large group discussions, in the field research and studies, product development, and plenty of mentoring from industry experts volunteering their time. The winning pitch from Spark Girlz was the brainchild of Steph Piper, following her own experiences of a female wanting to learn more about electronics and hardware skills at school. The team developed a suite of products aimed at encouraging young girls aged 8 to 12 years to learn engineering, electronics and mechanics, whilst supporting the teaching staff within the schools with a mix of dedicated and generalised resources within a class set.
